Fun with languages – gökotta

Sunny greetings, dear reader!

The Swedish word gökotta is associated with Ascension Day, which falls in late May or early June.

The tradition is to get up very early on that day to listen to the sound of the cuckoo. In some towns in Sweden, church services are held outdoors on that day. Nowadays, the word gökotta is more about waking up early to enjoy the peaceful quiet and admire the beauty of nature, especially the sound of birds singing. I am wishing for my readers and myself plenty of gökotta mornings!
